Day 169/September 17

Miles hiked: 11.10 in 5:04

Start: Spivey Gap, US 19W, Ramseytown, NC

Finish: River Road, Erwin, TN

Elevation gain: 1,595'

Sometimes, as you hike along in your little reverie, an object catches your attention and brings a smile to your face, like this brilliantly lit cluster of yellow Rhododendron leaves.

The Nolichucky River as seen from the AT just south of Erwin, Tennessee.

When I first saw these seed pods littering the trail, I thought they were Morel mushrooms. Not.

I met Russ, who works at the North Carolina Zoo, a couple of days ago and we hiked together for about an hour, before he had to return to his car. One never knows how a conversation will wander--did you know that the human tongue has 90 muscles while an elephant's trunk has 40,000? Thanks, Russ.

Some post-hike carboloading.
