Day 9/April 9 -- an easy day in Connecticut, with sunshine!

Miles hiked: 6.93

Starting location: Route 44, Salisbury, CT

Ending location: Paradise Lane Trail to East Street, Mt. Washington, MA

Elevation gain: 2,057'

Today was a recovery day--my knee was pretty sore after the longish hike on Mt. Greylock yesterday. Colette and I decided to hike along a section of the trail that we had done before, but in pouring rain. Today was much nicer with brilliant sunshine and pleasant temperatures. We weren't the only ones to appreciate the sun:

This was on the long climb to Lions Head, a south-facing slope, so obviously it had warmed up enough to entice this snake to enjoy the sunshine, too.

The only other climb of note was up to Bear Mountain, which is where Colette got to do her geocaching; caches are few and far between along the AT. Here's what you would be looking for:

Actually, that was after Colette had removed one rock.

Caches can hold a variety of items, usually there is a logbook that one can use to sign in, little trinkets for kids--take one leave one, being the guiding rule. And here, Colette is leaving a "travel bug," which has a unique identifier on it so that one can track it on the web. This bug is slated to eventually visit all fifty states. Colette picked in up in Northampton and has now moved it along to Connecticut. Note that a this is an ammo box, so it is large enough to hold that travel bug.

The only technical descent of the day--Colette demonstrates the safe "butt slide" technique.

Route from my Suunto.
